The fifth annual Matt Lindsay Memorial Golf Tournament tees off this Saturday, August 3rd, at the Awarii Dunes Golf Course in Axtell, Nebraska. Matthew Lindsay passed away in 2014 at the age of 28 from cholangiocarcinoma, also known as bile duct cancer. Ever since, the Lindsay family has been commemorating his memory with the annual tournament, with funds directed to cholangiocarcinoma research through TargetCancer Foundation.

Spencer Lindsay, a former kicker for the University of Nebraska football team, grew up idolizing his older brother Matt, saying he played sports “to be just like him”. Matt’s influence even helped guide Spencer into deciding to become a Cornhusker. After Matt passed away, Spencer and his family began hosting the annual 4-person scramble tournament as a way to keep Matt’s memory alive. Additionally, they see it as a way to channel all of the anger and emotion they feel after his loss. By hosting this tournament every year, Spencer says that he and his family are, “using their emotion for something good, so that there’s a family somewhere down the line that doesn’t have to go through the same pain we did”.

In addition to it being a great way to gather friends and family to celebrate Matt’s life, the Lindsays and their community have raised over $40,000 in the past four years for TargetCancer Foundation. This money has played a critical role in helping TargetCancer Foundation to fund the cholangiocarcinoma research that the family is deeply committed to.

From the beginning, the Lindsays wanted to see their donations have an impact on research. Spencer noted, “with TargetCancer, we can really see where the money is going, and we can see the end results”. He even calls working with TargetCancer Foundation a “home run”, thanks to the dedication the organization has shown to funding research to find treatments that were not available for his brother.

With 15 teams already signed up (and spots filling up fast), a putting contest, and Nebraska football tickets on the line, the Matt Lindsay Memorial Golf Tournament is helping to inspire positive change in the field of rare cancer research with TargetCancer Foundation.
